Neil Druckmann, the influential head of Naughty Dog and a driving force behind HBO's critically acclaimed adaptation of The Last of Us, is stepping away from his creative duties on the TV series to dedicate his full attention to the game studio's upcoming projects. This move includes his role in writing and directing their highly anticipated next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Druckmann, who served as an executive producer, co-writer, and director on the first two seasons of the show alongside Craig Mazin, made the "difficult decision" to transition his focus after the completion of Season 2, which concluded its seven-episode run in May. The series was officially renewed for a third season in April.
Druckmann's Statement on Departure
In a statement shared via Naughty Dog's official X (formerly Twitter) account, Druckmann explained his decision. "With work completed on Season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on Season 3, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, along with my responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative," he stated.
He expressed profound gratitude for his time on the show, calling co-creating it a "career highlight" and commending the cast and crew for their "thoughtful approach and dedication" in adapting The Last of Us Part I and continuing with The Last of Us Part II.
Writer Haley Gross Also Departs
In a related development, Haley Gross, who co-wrote The Last of Us Part II game and contributed as a writer to the second season of the HBO series, has also announced her departure from the show. In an Instagram post, Gross stated she was "taking a step back" to "make space for what comes next," hinting at "truly rad projects ahead." She echoed Druckmann's sentiments of appreciation for the "life-changing" experience of working on the adaptation.
Future of 'The Last of Us' TV Series
The third season of HBO's The Last of Us is expected to delve into the latter half of The Last of Us Part II game, with a significant focus on the character of Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, who was a central antagonist in the second season. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey continue in their lead roles as Joel and Ellie.
Naughty Dog's next gaming endeavor, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, was first announced at The Game Awards 2024, signaling a new chapter for the acclaimed developer.
